Types of Necklace Chains: The Visual Guide

Not all chains are created equal. Some are built like tanks (Franco, Rope). Some are fragile and kink easily (Herringbone, Snake). If you want to buy a chain that lasts forever, you need to know the construction.

Here are the 5 most popular chain types, ranked by durability.

1. Franco Chain (The Tank)

If durability is your #1 priority, buy a Franco.

  • Construction: V-shaped links are woven together to create a smooth, four-sided box. It is incredibly dense.
  • Pros: It doesn't kink. It holds heavy pendants easily. It feels smooth on the skin.
  • Cons: Expensive (high gram weight).

2. Rope Chain (The Classic)

The most popular chain type in history.

  • Construction: Thousands of tiny oval links are twisted into a spiral. It reflects light from every angle.
  • Pros: Incredible sparkle. Very strong if solid.
  • Cons: If links break, it is difficult to repair seamlessly. Hollow versions are very fragile.

3. Cuban Link (The Statement)

The icon of hip-hop and luxury.

  • Construction: Oval links are flattened and twisted to lay flat against the chest.
  • Pros: Does not tangle. Looks massive for its weight. Very masculine.
  • Cons: Heavy. Can flip over if not perfectly made.

4. Figaro (The Italian)

A variation of the Cuban Link with a pattern.

  • Construction: Usually 3 small circular links followed by 1 elongated oval link.
  • Pros: Visually interesting. Lighter (and cheaper) than a Cuban link of the same width.
  • Cons: The elongated link is a weak point if pulled hard.

5. Herringbone / Snake (The Fragile Beauty)

Beautiful, but dangerous.

  • Construction: Flat, wide links pressed tightly together to look like a solid ribbon of gold.
  • Pros: Maximum shine. Looks like liquid gold.
  • Cons: Do not sleep in this. It kinks permanently. Once bent, it cannot be fixed. It catches hair easily.

Summary Checklist

| Chain Type | Durability | Sparkle | Heavy Pendant? | | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | | Franco | 10/10 | 6/10 | Yes | | Rope | 8/10 | 10/10 | Yes | | Cuban | 9/10 | 5/10 | Yes (if thick) | | Figaro | 7/10 | 5/10 | No | | Herringbone | 2/10 | 10/10 | NO |

Recommendation: For your first chain, buy a 3mm Rope Chain (20 or 22 inches). It works with everything. If you have a heavy pendant (like a cross), get a Franco.
