Ring Stuck on Finger? Don't Panic. Do This.
It happens to the best of us. Heat, salt, pregnancy, or just a long day can cause fingers to swell, trapping your ring. Before you call the fire department, try these methods.
STOP PULLING!
Pulling on the ring causes the skin to bunch up and swell more. Stop immediately.
Method 1: The Windex Trick (Jeweler's Secret)
Jewelers swear by Windex (or any glass cleaner).
- Spray a generous amount of Windex on the finger and ring.
- Windex contains surfactants that reduce surface tension better than soap. It is also slippery without being gummy.
- Gently rock the ring back and forth while pulling slowly.
Method 2: The Ice Bath
Cold shrinks blood vessels and reduces swelling.
- Fill a bowl with ice water.
- Submerge your hand for 5-10 minutes (as long as you can stand it).
- Raise your hand above your head for another minute to drain blood away.
- Apply lubricant (oil, soap, Windex) and try to remove.
Method 3: The Dental Floss Wrap
This compresses the finger to allow the ring to slide over.
- Slip one end of dental floss under the ring.
- Wrap the floss tightly around your finger, starting at the ring and going past the knuckle. This "squishes" the finger.
- Take the end of the floss that is under the ring and start unwinding it. As it unwinds, it will push the ring up and over the compressed finger.
When to Cut It
If your finger is turning purple, numb, or painful, go to an ER or fire station immediately. They have tools to cut the ring off safely. A ring can be repaired. Your finger cannot.
