Welcome to the world of diamond economics. Diamonds are not priced per stone; they are priced per carat, and that base rate increases exponentially as the stone gets larger. Understanding this concept is the key to spotting value and verifying if you are getting a fair deal.
The Exponential Curve (Natural Diamonds)
Natural diamonds follow a scarcity curve. Small diamonds are common. Large, gem-quality diamonds are geological anomalies.
As weight increases, rarity compounds.

When comparing diamonds, always convert to Price Per Carat (PPC).
Formula: Total Price / Weight = PPC
- Diamond A: $5,500 for a 0.90ct stone.
- $5,500 / 0.90 = $6,111 per carat.
- Diamond B: $6,200 for a 1.01ct stone.
- $6,200 / 1.01 = $6,138 per carat.
In this example, Diamond A is cheaper in total dollars, but Diamond B is actually a better value per carat, considering it crosses the 1.00ct magic threshold.
Historical Trends 2020-2026
- Natural Diamonds: The price per carat has been volatile but generally trends upward for high-quality, large stones (3ct+ investment grade). Mid-range commercial goods (1ct-2ct) have seen softer pricing due to lab competition.
- Lab Diamonds: The price per carat has plummeted. In 2018, PPC was ~$4,000. In 2026, PPC is ~$500 - $800.
